I have started and abandoned a lot of blogs. On Blogger, Xanga, the blogs feature of MySpace, several self-hosted tumblelogs, Tumblr, and several WordPress sites. Outside of those, I also had many journals, often buying a new one every time the last one stalled.

I started b10g.xyz in November 2022, not long after Twitter changed hands, on the theory that platforms you don’t own are bad places to leave your work. It’s kicked around with posts here and there ever since, but I rebooted it in August 2026 with a goal to post at minimum twice a week.

The origin of the name birdwatching is mostly traceable to the fact that I really wanted a domain that would be short and fun to say. I picked b10g.xyz because it was only 8 characters, it rhymed a little to say it (“bee-ten-gee-dot-ecks-why-zee” - sorry “zed” sayers) and it felt like a not so subtle throwback to the “leetspeek” I’d encountered as a kid on the early internet. When I was writing my first post, I joked that if b10g was a numeronym it could stand for birdwatching. For years it would sit at the back of my head that I should just make it the name, but I never did. When I moved to Micro.blog, I redesigned the site and decided I was finally ready to claim the name.

The site is hosted by Micro.blog and generated using Hugo with a custom theme I made. It uses Inter as the primary font, blockquotes use Google Sans Code, and the blog wordmark uses ChiKareGo2—a faithful homage to Susan Kare’s Chicago font on the original Macintosh.

The Binoculars icon was made by me, Cody Bromley, and can be distributed, remixed, adapted, and built upon the material in any medium or format, even for commercial purposes as long as you give credit. (CC BY 4.0 )

Posts are written in Markdown because writing requires restraint. I do most of my writing using Drafts, on my phone or my Mac, whichever is nearer.

The replies shown at the bottom of posts are fetched from across the web. Replies from Micro.blog and Webmentions are handled by the Micro.blog platform. Threads, Mastodon and Bluesky replies are displayed using a custom web component inspired by oom-components/mastodon-comments and others. Mastodon and Bluesky have public APIs your browser can contact directly, but since Threads doesn’t, it calls a small Cloudflare Worker at api.b10g.xyz to get info it otherwise couldn’t.

This site is not equipped with any kind of analytics or trackers because I don’t want your data and analytics would be bad for my mental health.
